Control: Natural born killers – Chickens and Ducks

Slugs don’t have it all there own way, they have a whole range of predators out to get them. I hear you call out in sympathy, well maybe not. Rather than relying upon pathogens, barriers or chemicals you can work with nature to tip the red in tooth and claw in your favour and against that of the slugs.

Most of these (other than nematodes) are not normally that effective as you cannot encourage them in sufficient numbers to stem the tide of slugs flowing across your garden. One exception to this is to go large, rather than looking at beetles and bugs, try chickens, geese and ducks. Not only do they control the slugs but they will also provide you with fresh eggs. Just make sure they have some grass to eat and keep them away from seedlings.

You want to keep your grass short around the beds so the chickens can see the slugs, you also want to make sure your don’t let them onto the beds when you are young tasty seedings as you may find the chickens do more damage then the slugs by scraping up the earth and eating the juicy seedlings themselves.
